NeoPac unveils world's brightest single-packaged, point-like-source LED
Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:00

-- Emitter offers 1,000 lm of maintain luminous flux at 20 watts.

World's brightest LED The multi-chip, ultra-high-power, single-packaged NeoPac Emitter was assembled at Cotco, a Cree company, by using Cree EZ1000 power chips. The efficacy of maintain luminous flux of the Emitter is 50 lm/W as the power is driven at 20 watts and Tj kept at 70℃.

NeoPac Opto, a subsidiary of NeoPac Lighting Group, announces today its proprietary System-In-Package (SIP) LEDs packaging approach is already to deliver a custom designed NeoPac Light Engine with point-like-source that the light output of maintain luminous flux at over 1,000 lm.

As a frontier in solid-state-lighting industry, NeoPac is always at the forefront of technologies breakthrough. By unveiling this groundbreaking achievement on LEDs packaging technology, NeoPac Opto pushes single-packaged LEDs brightness output ever further to a new high level in the industry.

It has achieved a new world record of LED maintain luminous flux at over 1,000 lm, operating at 720 mA, 20 watts, and undoubtedly will become a new standard in applying LED light sources for general lighting application.

The NeoPac Light Engine was made by seamlessly integrating first level LEDs package and second-level thermal management solution to become a system-in-package light source component. Most importantly, the 1,000 lm light output is measured by maintain luminous flux at 20 watts as the ambient temperature at 25℃.

By coupling a proprietary micro heat pipe based thermal module, the LEDs junction temperature (Tj) of the NeoPac Emitter is well controlled at under 70℃. Since the efficacy of the NeoPac Emitter is 70 lm/W at 350 mA, the initial luminous flux (Tj at 25) at 20W is up to 1,100 lm. The Tj of NeoPac Emitter is controlled at 70℃, the initial decay rate of lumen output is only 9%.

The thermal resistance (Rjc) of the package (NeoPac Emitter) is 0.5℃/W. As driving the power at 20W, the thermal resistance (Rca) of NeoPac Thermal Module is 1.75℃/W. Temperature difference (ΔT) between LEDs p-n junction and the surrounding air is 45℃, since the system thermal resistance (Rja) from junction to ambient of the NeoPac Light Engine is measured at 2.25℃/W. By using system-in-package approach, the heat generated at LEDs p-n junction is effectively pumped away through micro heat pipe and dissipated by aluminum fins to the surrounding airs.

“NeoPac LEDs packaging technology of 1,000 lm in maintain luminous flux is far ahead leading the industry. Since we are talking about thousands of lumens in general lighting applications, a single packaged LED offering 1,000 lm output of maintain luminous flux will become a milestone for accelerating adoption of solid-state lighting technology toward general lighting application,” according to Jeffrey Chen, the chairman and CEO of NeoPac Lighting Group.

For multi-chip, single point-like-source LEDs packaging platform, achieving initial luminous flux at 1,000 with ultra-high power level is not much difficult since the Tj is initially at 25℃. But it is meaningless talking about the initial lumen (Tj at 25) for general lighting applications since for actual application the LEDs junction temperature in ultra-high-power LED package is much higher than 25℃ and even higher than 120℃.

At high Tj, the LEDs output lumen decays dramatically. For single-packaged, ultra-high-power application, high heat density (hot spot) inside the package is always a vital issue being encountered. It is very difficult to solve the high density hot spot problem in package level, module level and even in lighting system level. The temperature gradient from LEDs PN junction point through package and system to the surrounding dissipation air has to be controlled as low as possible. That means both package and system thermal resistance (Rjc and Rja) also have to be well controlled at a very low value accordingly.

“Our technologies are revolutionary breakthroughs in the solid-state-lighting industry. In past two years, we have successfully developed a new LEDs technology platform for general lighting, called NeoPac Universal Platform. Based on this proprietary platform, both LEDs package and system thermal resistance can be tremendously reduced. We are talking about double digits power dissipation for single-packaged LEDs and controlling the LEDs junction temperature at very low level as well. For general lighting applications, we are talking about maintain lumens or useful lumens instead of initial lumen. A high maintain lumen output along with high maintain efficacy will be meaningful to the lighting industry and thermal management is the key for achieving this goal. Basing on NeoPac Universal Platform, we also have been developing NeoBulb Indoor Solution and NeoBulb Outdoor Solution and completed a series of product lines development– NeoBulb Indoor Lighting Devices and NeoBulb Outdoor Lighting Devices. The ultra-high-brightness, point-like-source NeoPac Light Engine solution can also be widely used for a variety of potential applications, fiber optics, digital projectors, automotive headlamps, to name just a few.” Jeffrey Chen states.

The 1,000 lm point-like source NeoPac Light Engine will be demonstrated at the 4th China International Forum on Solid State Lighting (2007Shanghai) during August 22-24, 2007.
